What to Expect with a 1-on-1 Catching Lesson
Please arrive a few minutes early to start stretching. Your coach will talk with you before the appointment starts about how you’ve been catching in the games, and we will plan your workout from there.
First-time lessons will go through a short evaluation of: their stances, receiving habits, blocking technique, and throwing fundamentals
- Calling pitches and setting up in appropriate stances
- Receiving habits
- Blocking technique
- Throwing fundamentals
After seeing you go through the positions, we will:
- Do some dedicated receiving practice every session – CATCHING is the main job of the position!
- Controlled blocking reps that encourage centering the ball on the chest protector
- Break down proper exchange and throwing sequence to improve your pop time
As you do more lessons, you will develop:
- Trust and confidence in your catcher’s gear!
- Improved ability to recognize pitches in the strike zone, shadow of zone, and clearly out of the zone
- Anticipation of wild pitches and blocking the more challenging ones
- Quality exchange of ball to throwing hand at midline of body, and good footwork to improve your pop times
- Other less common plays including:
- Recovering wild pitches from the backstop
- Tag plays at the plate
- Fielding bunts with throws to all bases
- Catching popups near fences and out front of plate
What to bring to a Catching lesson:
- Turf shoes or tennis shoes AND cleats! We will go outside and use the fields if weather permits
- All your catching equipment, catcher’s mitt, and cup!
- Dress in layers appropriately for the weather so you’re prepared to be inside or outside
