Founder and Owner Scott Bankhead
Scott Bankhead, a 10-year Major League Baseball pitcher, is the founder and owner of the North Carolina Baseball Academy (NCBA), which he established on December 2, 1998. After a successful professional career, Bankhead dedicated his post-baseball life to mentoring young players both on and off the field. With 26 years of playing experience, including time with five MLB teams, Bankhead developed a passion for passing on his knowledge. Under his guidance, NCBA has produced three Major League players and hundreds of collegiate athletes over 23 years.
A Reidsville, NC native, Bankhead excelled at Reidsville Senior High before committing to the University of North Carolina (UNC) as a right-handed pitcher. At UNC, he helped the team win three consecutive ACC championships, setting numerous records, including a streak of 20 straight wins. Bankhead's collegiate achievements earned him two All-ACC and All-American honors, and in 1984, he was selected as a first-round draft pick by the Kansas City Royals and earned a silver medal at the Los Angeles Olympics.
Bankhead's MLB career spanned five teams—Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and New York Yankees. His standout season came in 1989 with the Mariners, achieving a 14-6 record. During his career, he had the privilege of playing alongside future Hall of Famers on every team.
Beyond professional baseball, Bankhead has contributed to amateur baseball, serving as a coach with USA Baseball's 18U National Team. Over four years, he helped develop future stars, coaching several first-round MLB draft picks and securing gold and silver medals in international competitions, including the 2019 World Cup in South Korea.
Bankhead's legacy extends beyond the diamond, earning him induction into both the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame. His dedication to shaping young athletes and fostering future community leaders underscores his commitment to the sport and personal growth through baseball.
