Learn to Field Like the Pros
Struggling on the defensive side of the ball? We offer fielding lessons. In these lessons you will learn the art of footwork, body control and momentum, and how to properly use your hands to field the baseball. Defensive is a critical component of the game and being able to field like a pro elevates your game to that next level.
What to Expect from a 1-on-1 Fielding Lesson
Please arrive a few minutes early to start stretching. Your coach will talk with you before the appointment starts about what positions you want to zero-in on, and play catch with you to loosen your arm and start evaluating your throwing mechanics
First-time lessons will go through a short evaluation of their fielding and throwing mechanics, followed by:
- Slow-motion dry reps focusing on proper fielding positions and sequence
- 6 F's - Feet, Field, Footwork, Funnel, Fire, Follow Through
- Mirror work or cone drills to illustrate correct fundamentals
Then it’s time to do the work! You and your coach will:
- Focus on developing correct footwork, fielding positions, and actions
- Work through a drill series that helps you create good habits
- Controlled reps that put all the motions together
- Live ground balls and fly balls that challenge you to apply the correct mechanics at game speed
As you do more lessons, you will address:
- Anticipation of the ball being put in play, and a quality first step (FEET)
- Efficient footwork, posture, glove action, and timing to secure the catch (FIELD)
- Quality exchange of ball to throwing hand at midline of body (FUNNEL)
- Using your feet to generate good momentum and direction to the target (FOOTWORK)
- Making a strong, accurate throw to secure the out (FIRE)
- Preventing unnecessary stress on the throwing arm (FOLLOW)
- Infielders will focus on fielding positions including Routine ground balls, Backhands, Forehands, Slow rollers, double plays, force plays, applying tags, and throwing from different arm angles
- Outfielders will focus on taking quality angles to Routine ground balls, Gap shots/Line drives, Fly balls, plays near fences, and throwing long-hops
What to bring to a fielding lesson:
- Turf shoes or tennis shoes AND cleats! We will go outside and use the fields if weather permits
- Your fielding glove(s)
- Dress in layers appropriately for the weather so you’re prepared to be inside or outside
- Sunglasses are a plus if you have them
